Matcha for Beginners: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Matcha may seem like a simple drink—a little powder, water, and you're done. But if you're new to this unique green tea, you can easily make a few mistakes that affect the taste and quality of your cup.
Here are the five most common mistakes beginners make – and how to avoid them.
1. Pouring boiling water
Matcha is a very delicate tea. Using boiling water can make it bitter and lose its nutritional value.
How to avoid this:
Use water at a temperature of 75–80°C. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, simply let the water boil for 5–7 minutes before preparing.
2. No powder sifting
Matcha clumps very easily. Without prior sifting, lumps may remain, making it difficult to mix.
How to avoid this:
Always sift matcha through a fine sieve directly into a bowl. This will ensure a smooth consistency and better frothing.
3. Using the wrong tools
A fork or a whisk will not be able to properly mix the powder.
How to avoid this:
For best results, use a traditional bamboo whisk – a chasen. Its shape allows for the perfect blending of matcha and water, creating a distinctive froth.
4. Inappropriate proportions
Too little powder will make the drink watery and weak. Too much will make it too intense and bitter.
How to avoid this:
Use about 1/2 level teaspoon or 1–2 bamboo measuring spoons (chashaku) per serving. You can adjust the amount to your preference.
5. Improper storage
Matcha loses its freshness, color and flavor very quickly if exposed to light, moisture or air.
How to avoid this:
Store matcha in an airtight, opaque container, preferably in a cool, dry place. You can also store it in the refrigerator, but only in a tightly closed container to prevent the absorption of odors and moisture.
Summary
Everyone makes mistakes when starting their matcha journey—and that's completely normal. The key is understanding a few simple rules that will ensure every cup is not only delicious but also truly relaxing. Maintain the quality of your matcha from the start, and it will become a valuable ritual in your daily life.
